I kid you not, we actually found the place that has Deseret Industry stickers on their merchandise. I've always been told that the clothes that don't sell in the Utah stores eventually get sent to poorer countries, but now I've actually seen it. First. Hand. And it was pretty super exciting.
We were just walking on a street close by the main square and saw a store that looked like it had a bunch of random stuff inside, so we decided to take a look. We could tell it was definitely a second-hand store - all of the toys were laid out in rows and there were multiples of the same toys, in all kinds of conditions. Some workers were opening huge bags of clothes and dumping them into bins for other workers to sort through.
Our first clue that the merchandise had come from the States was that all of the books were in English. Our first clue that they might have come from Utah was the multiple copies of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" lining the bookshelves. I asked a worker where all of the stuff was from and she said America. Then we saw the Howard W. Hunter book. Hmmm...
Then we saw the movie bin and our suspicions were confirmed :) Called to Serve, The Prodigal Son, Historic Nauvoo, Our Heavenly Father's Plan, The Worth of Souls, etc., all with DI stickers on them. So cool!
We walked around for a while looking at the stuff. $1.50 for a shirt or skirt - not bad. So amazing that the Church is able to give these people jobs, even in Granada, Nicaragua. We were only able to look around for a few minutes before they closed the store for the evening, but I will definitely have to go back to this place soon!
